San Jose has changed much over the years. As a child I remember apricot, prune and cherry orchards throughout the city. I can remember walking to the corner store past a yard of chickens and goats and a donkey. All the major crossroads blanketed with every make and color of vehicle, I remember as two lane roads....one lane in each direction. My family has a long history in this city and I can give you a tour of who in my family owned this, or built that, at one time or an other. There are even some imfamous accounts and pictures of relatives in the historical notes of San Jose. So San Jose means a great deal to me. Do I miss the orchards, the quaint downtown with hole-in-the-wall restuarants, our San Jose State campus with headshops just down the block and even the numerous canneries? Yes, I do. However, I appreciate San Jose and its changing face.
There is much to be said about the new San Jose which would take forever and day to cover, so I will only refer to the diversity of this city. We have in San Jose, as in other large cities, people, cultures and religions from every corner of the world. Going to any of the Malls in S.J. is similar to a fashion show highlighting ethnicity. I believe that this diversity is our greatest asset and strength.
